April, 1999  -  Unofficial Business Meeting Minutes

The Great Lakes Region business meeting was called to order at 1:00pm on April 10, 1999 by President Myra Powell.   Myra thanked members for joining together for the meeting.

Roll Call of Chapters - The following were present:

  • Alpha Tau chapter - Richard Hays*
  • Beta Delta chapter - Carla Hardenburgh, Kay Speckhart, and Sharon R. West.
  • Beta Epsilon chapter - Barbara Michaels.
  • Beta Lambda chapter - Ruth Eaken.
  • Chicago Area chapter - Anne Balzanto and Trish Genovese.
  • Cleveland Area chapter - Sandy Zieve*.
  • Detroit Area chapter - Evelyn P. Kozar, Emma Mahar, and Jean Wright*.
  • Fort Wayne Area chapter - Marty Burns.
  • Gamma Delta chapter - Myra Wright Powell*
  • Gamma Gamma chapter - Marsha Berry, Carol Cannon, Charlotte Miller, and Kay Plew.
  • Gamma Nu chapter - Barbara Foster*.
  • Greater Milwaukee Area chapter - Ethyl Trovinger.
  • Indianapolis Area chapter - Jacquie Eley*.
  • Northern Indiana Area chapter - Carol Paulhun.
  • Toledo Area chapter - Doris Hedler* and JoAnn Scott.

*Designates that the person is also a voting officer in the region.

Quorum Report - Barbara Foster , parliamentarian, gave the quorum report:   There are 25 dues paying chapters plus nine officers for a total of 34.   A voting quorum is 18 (14 chapters plus 7 officers in attendance).   A simple majority vote is 11 and a 2/3 majority vote is 13.   There is a voting quorum for this meeting.

Executive Board Report / Recommendations - Richard Hays reported on the following Executive Board recommendations:

  • Establish a Region calendar.
  • Review, upon the request of the Greater Milwaukee Area chapter, an alternate and possible more central site for the Great Lakes Region business meetings.

COMMITTEE REPORTS / RECOMMENDATIONS

Audit - No report.

Awards -

Bylaws - The Bylaws Committee was asked by the Greater Milwaukee Area chapter to consider a bylaws amendment regarding the qualifications of officers.   This will be considered in a future meeting.

Conference - The Great Lakes Region Professional Conference will be held on July 28-30, 2000 at the Marriott Hotel in Troy, Michigan.   It will cost $89.00 per night, plus taxes for one to four people per room.   The theme of the conference is  Leadership for Success in the New Millennium.  There is a required $500 deposit to the hotel.

Finance - The 1999-2000 budget was presented.   It was approved.

Long-Range Planning

Membership & Retention - Kay Speckhart reported the following recommendations:

  • Set up a scholarship, possibly a member's child or at a local high school for a student going into education.
  • Organize a workshop for university students as a service project ... ie. panel on interviews, what a first year teacher should know.
  • Mentor "So you want to be a teacher day".
  • Portfolios - create a workshop for college students and experienced teachers since Illinois within 5 years will have to have portfolios.
  • Develop a web site regional so districts and chapters can use and get help from regional.
  • Have two chapters (ie. Beta Delta meet in Chicago area) and conduct a workshop, lunch, activities, etc.
  • Target graduate students.

Special Projects Committee - A new form has been developed.   The due date is now February 1st.

Newsletter Editor - The deadline for the summer newsletter is June 1, 1999.   Send all information to Jacquie Eley.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

NEW BUSINESS

  • A request for financial assistance for breakouts at Biennial was presented.   It was decided to contribute $25 towards the breakouts.
  • Options were presented for the fall meeting.  It was decided to have our fall meeting on September 10-11, 1999 at the Hampton Inn & Suites in South Bend.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The auction raised $160.00 for the Great Lakes Region Scholarship fund.

ADJOURNMENT

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:00pm.
