Netmeeting is a Program that allows users to share information over the Internet or a Lan(Local Area Network).  The program allows Users to connect to other users over the lan or internet and--

chat with others using the keyboard.  The chat can be saved and viewed later.
use a Whiteboard to sketch or draw out ideas.  All users in the meeting have the ability to add to or edit sketches or information.  Wrok on the whiteboard can be save and printed for later use or later presentations.
send Files to each person on the meeting.
share a program on one  machine with someone else.  This could be important for sharing input into a report or teaching another user how to use a new program  or software feature or getting an opinion on ones work.
talk via a sound card to someone else live reducing long distance charges to the cost of internet access.
see via video capture equipment a live picture or someone or something.(It's not TV quality but it is a step in the right direction.)

Netmeeting is in its early stages but its promise is strong. I encourage it's use because of it's potential to change our access to others.   For now, it is part of Internet Explorer giving it a feature any pro-technology teacher can appreciate, IT IS FREE.  Netmeeting has some limitations so move slowly and with caution,  but take the time not to ignore it's potentials as Phone lines and Networks get faster.  Visit the sites listed below for the latest information. And Good Luck!!!
