Buddy Software Connection Packages

Buddy Software provide users a means of seeing when their Friends and Family are on line.  For the software to work, users must register with a server providing a common meeting place to link with other users.  These servers have software that allows a user to post his or her name on the server when they log on to the internet.  Their software will then scan the list to find their friends, family and Buddies.  When those Buddies are found, the user is notified and a chat window is opened offering to connect with each other through the built in chat features or by notifying the other to meet them at a teleconferencing site or other internet communications.

ICQ and AOL are two of the most popular places to link.  ICQ has a strong system and lots of options.  AOL has a large base of users due to the Large AOL/Compuserve Base and it's distribution as part of the Netscape Communicator Package.
