"The Honor of His Name"

Exodus  20:7  and Psalm 111:1-10

"You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name."

Exalted, majestic, transcendent, overwhelming, feared are some adjectives that describe the essence of the one and only living God.  His essence is in His Name.  His Name then is to be honored and not misused.  Rubel Shelly tells of an angry man that was using God's name freely as he vented his anger at a clerk in a department store.  Almost every sentence contained a request for God to consign someone or something to perdition.  Standing with the enraged man was his young son who seemed unsurprised at such language.  An older clerk walked over and asked, "Pardon me, sir, but do you always do your praying in public and so loudly?"  "Praying!" Exclaimed the man.  "What are you talking about?"  "Whether you mean to or not," said the soft-spoken clerk, "you've been uttering one blasphemous prayer after another, asking the Lord to destroy everything you don't like.  My God is not in the damning business, and you are giving this young boy the wrong idea about God.  My God desires to save, not condemn."  Let's honor God's name.

Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth.  Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day.  Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.  For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.   (Psalm 96:1-4)
