"Love Life!" Exodus 20:13 "We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death." In the Sixth Commandment God says to His people, "You shall not murder." The King James Version has it, "Thou shalt not kill." What do we mean by killing? Do we mean war, capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, or self-defense? Is this what God was speaking of in the Sixth Commandment? Is it a commandment limited to actions alone, or is it more involved? What about the attitudes and emotions behind the actions --- things like hatred, jealously, anger, greed, arrogance, and callous words? Aren't these also murderous attitudes that kill? Understanding the implications of the Sixth Commandment becomes extremely important if it encompasses attitudes as well as actions. You may think that this commandment does not apply to you since you have never physically killed anyone. But if this commandment takes into account evil thoughts, attitudes, and intentions, then we are all in serious trouble. That are the implications of the Sixth Commandment for us? "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyhone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca," is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell." (Matthew 5:21-24)
