"The Search for Greener Grass" (Proverbs 23:4-7; I Timothy 6:6-19) "Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint." What a wonderful Lord and Savior we celebrate during worship. If you believe He is, then sing His praises and reflect on His love for us. He covets your worship. The word covet refers to an enthusiastic desire. The Hebrew word for covet is morally neutral - meaning it can be a desire for a good thing as well as a bad one. The tenth commandment prohibits misdirected desires; not ambition, hard work or achievement. Misdirected desires occurs when ambition for earthly things twist our convictions and priorities, creates ill will towards our neighbor, and dethrones God as first in our life. Christians need a clear vision as to what is important, eternal, and godly. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. (I Timothy 6:6-12)
